Peak Bloodstock - From Start to Finish

PEAK BLOODSTOCK is first runner in exporting horses to Serbia

Peak Bloodstock Ltd .are proud to announce their new association with Serbia as a country of export for Irish bred horses.

Following their recent association with Pat Shanahan riding the winner of the Serbian Derby, PEAK BLOODSTOCK have announced that 3 of their recent purchases at the Tattersalls yearling Sales and 2 other yearlings have been exported to train in Serbia. These horses will be trained from the main track at Belgrade, the centre of horse racing in Serbia and hopes are high that the horses purchased by Sean Tiernan of PEAK BLOODSTOCK Ltd. will perform with a great deal of success as 2yo’s in 2010.

The association and new relationship with Serbia has come about through Sean’s presence in the sales arena’s of France, Keeneland and Ireland over the past number of years. This presence along with the success rates of the horses purchased persuaded their new Serbian clients to contact PEAK and strike up this unlikely relationship.

Irish bred horses are known worldwide for their high quality and as the market has hit tough times in both Ireland and the UK, there is a current opportunity to select good horses at the right prices. The horses selected for Serbia at the sales will now join a select group of privately sold yearlings and 2yo’s on the lorry for Serbia.

Official horse racing in Serbia, as it is now known, stretches back as far back as 1863 and immediately took the horse loving population of this great country by storm. Unfortunately political upheaval in more modern times had led to the dissipation of the industry and it is now a case of building the sport back to its former glory.

Horse racing in Serbia is centred around the Racetrack in Belgrade, where they hold flat racing on a regular basis throughout their season. There is no jump racing recognised in Serbia at the moment but they do manage to hold over 30 days of flat racing per year. These races are run, as mentioned, mainly at the Belgrade track but they also boast 4 other racecourses throughout the country and an additional 10 trotting tracks.

There are over 200 thoroughbreds in training at the moment and an additional 300 trotters make up quite a small number of horses in training, but this also is changing with Serbian buyers now making regular raids to Ireland and the UK auction houses to select good stock at value prices. Wile Serbia has a few large studs in operation, many of the colts and fillies bought at our recognised sales will form the back bone of the thoroughbred breeding industry in years to come.

Serbian horses have also plundered many prizes throughout Europe and one of their champions, “Billy Allen” was a winner in France, Germany, Italy and Sweden during his racing career.

Serbia , like many countries has felt the brunt of recent economic times, however from speaking to the people involved in the horse racing community, you sense a willingness and a desire to rebuild and develop their beloved Horse Racing Industry.

While Serbia is a new location for exporting horses, PEAK also confirm that they have recently exported some nice horses to Cyprus to run there, so it looks like the rest of Europe is taking advantage of the current low prices to boost their stock at home.

Along with exporting to new countries, Sean and co. continue to source from their main contacts in France and Ireland and boast an impressive number of high quality horses on their current radar.
