Success at the Track: Review of the 2008-2009 NH Season
As we look back on the 2008-2009 season and forward to the 2009-2010 season, PEAK BLOODSTOCK is winners to horses ratio continues to grow from strength to strength.
We managed to source the winners of 30 different races and filled the placings in a further 56 races.
A total of 33 horses won and were placed in Ireland the UK and France during the year, including, Grade 1 Punchestown Champion Hurdle, Grade 1 Aintree John Smiths Hurdle, Grade 2 Red Mills Hurdle, Grade 3 Novice Hurdle, Listed hurdle, November Premier Hcap and placed in the Irish Champion Hurdle. This was a fantastic achievement for us considering the strict selection process and the small number of horses which we actually buy and congratulations must go out to the many different owners and trainers who had winners with horses sourced by PEAK BLOODSTOCK Ltd over the 2008-2009 season.
We feel especially proud of the younger horses who won bumpers and novice hurdles, horses which we cared for and prepared at our yard at Garryhack House in Killinick. These horses are selected from France as yearlings and two year olds and then shipped to us in Ireland. Indeed, this year we have probably our nicest crop of young stock for sale. Of course a special mention must go to Solwhit, River Liane and Academy Sir Harry who raised our profile and managed many impressive performances last season. With normal improvement and the return of stars such as Glencove Marina, we are extremely confident of many big wins at the major festivals.
Along with the regular trips to France we are currently in the process of preparing our 3yo horses for this season and would like to invite anybody on the lookout for a nice horse to visit us and have a look at the stock available. Our contact numbers are 053 9135333 or we can be contacted at info@peakbloodstock.com .
Sales Success
In competitive markets it is very important that we as a Bloodstock Company can buy the right horses at the right prices for clients. This year already we have managed to sign for some very nice horses at the Tattersalls Derby Sale and more recently at the Arqana July Sales.
Tattersalls provided us with an opportunity to purchase a very nice Presenting, 3yo gelding and at Arqana, we selected some very nice young horses and horses in training for one of our new owners, Mr. Alan Potts and Mrs. Ann Potts.
The Arqana purchases were made up of 5 horses and included a smashing 3yo colt by Kalanisi, a 3yo winner on the flat by Falbrav and a two time winning 4yo gelding by Ultimately Lucky, named Referent.
Mr. Potts and his wife Ann, intend on leaving these horses in training in France with trainer JP Gallorini, himself a Champion Trainer. They have also added to their portfolio of horses in France with the private purchase of further unraced horses. With the prize money available in France for good horses there is every reason to be optimistic that these horses will more than pay their way over the NH season 2009-2010. We would like to wish them continued success with their French purchases, as Indigo Blue, their first runner and the first horse sourced by PEAK BLOODSTOCK with the intention of staying in France for Alan and Ann, recently won at Auteuil.
Irish Raids in France Racing:
Irish horses, owners and trainers are well known for their exploits abroad. From Perth, Cheltenham, Ffos Las to Auteuil, Dubai, Melbourne and the USA. More recently it has become popular to target the NH stars of the Irish and UK season at the end of season meetings and the early Autumn meetings at Auteuil in France. There are some obvious reasons behind these raids, one of which is the prize money available to winning connections. Mourad, owned by Teahon Consulting Limited, picked up €24,300 for finishing 4th in the French version of the Triumph Hurdle, while Jumbo Rio’s connections picked up €88,000 for finishing 2nd in a Grade 3 and Grade 1 hurdle. The prize money on offer is available through the French PMU betting system’s funding, where by they reinvest a large proportion of their generated revenue back into racing, not only at the top tracks and races at Auteuil, but also at the less well known tracks and races from 3yo maiden hurdles to all age handicap chases. We have been a long standing promoter of the French breed to Irish and UK clients and we will continue to source horses for Irish and UK racing, however we are also in a unique position due to our longstanding relationships with French trainers, to advise and help any Irish and UK owners and trainers of what opportunities are available in the French Racing calendar.. The prestige and honor associated with Irish and UK racing will always hold sway, however when racing in France offers up to 3 times the prize money per race as the Irish and UK equivalent races, then considering running horses in France must be taken more seriously.

Pat Shanahan Claims Glory for Ireland in Serbian Derby
Pat Shanahan, commissioned by PEAK BLOODSTOCK Ltd. to ride in the Serbian Derby, on Sunday the 12th of July, stole glory for his mount, Aegean Warning and his Serbian owners in their countries most prestigious flat race, The Serbian Derby.
Pat, riding for the first time in Serbia, was missing out on riding at the Oaks Weekend at the Curragh, but added to his list of derby wins, giving his Serbian mount a positive ride over the trip of 1m4f. Pat topped off the derby win with a further winner and 2nd place from his 3 rides.
PEAK BLOODSTOCK Ltd, had organised that an owner from Serbia visited Ireland recently to attend the Gorsebridge Breeze Up sales. This owner and Mr. Fabrice Chappet, a successful trainer on the flat in France, accompanied by Sean Tiernan of PEAK BLOODSTOCK bought several lots, and had a very enjoyable time. Following the sales they travelled to visit the Curragh and many private farms looking at young stock, yearlings and 2yo etc. They were inspired by what they saw and the regard in which the Irish jockeys are held in Ireland.
During the many conversations which arose during their trip they came up with the idea of asking an Irish jockey to take the ride on one of their entries in the Serbian derby and asked Sean to find the best available.
Sean thought that as the Serbian derby clashed with the Irish Oaks the job of finding a suitable jockey would be difficult, but was delighted when, having contacted his agent, Dave Keena, the 1st choice, Pat Shanahan declared himself available to ride. The foresight and work involved in sorting out riding arrangements has obviously paid off, leaving connections delighted and PEAK BLOODSTOCK now hope to open up further opportunities in exporting Irish bred horses to Serbia and the European market in general.
